Organ

The organ has been a recurring thread through Zanta Hofmeyr's recital and recording work. From the dedication of Richard Pantcheff's Sonata for violin and organ — premiered in 2010 at the Dutch Reformed Church Universiteitsoord in Pretoria with organist Wim Viljoen — to the recording of Arioso and Cantilena with Viljoen, the violin-and-organ pairing has produced some of her most distinctive collaborations.

The combination of the two instruments asks something specific of the violinist: the organ does not breathe the way a piano does, and so the lines must be drawn with longer arcs, broader sweeps of bow, and a sustained sense of architecture. In return the organ offers a register and a sustaining power no other accompanying instrument can match — capable of underpinning a meditative Adagio with cathedral-like space, or driving a final movement with a force the violin can ride rather than fight against.
