Join us for Schubertiade, a glorious afternoon celebrating the timeless genius of Franz Schubert, one of the most beloved composers of the Romantic era. Taking place at Uplands College at 3:00 pm on Sunday, 21 June, this special concert brings together an exceptional cast of South African musicians in a programme that showcases the lyrical beauty, emotional depth, and melodic brilliance for which Schubert is renowned. The programme features some of Schubert's most treasured works, including the iconic "Trout" Quintet, the dramatic and virtuosic song Erlkönig, the enchanting Shepherd on the Rock, and the sublime Impromptu in B-flat Major, Op. 142 No. 3.
Few chamber works have achieved the popularity and enduring appeal of the "Trout" Quintet. Instantly recognisable for its radiant melodies, sparkling piano writing, and unique instrumentation, it has become one of the most frequently performed chamber music masterpieces in the world. Its fourth movement, based on Schubert's famous song Die Forelle ("The Trout"), has transcended the classical sphere to become a fixture of popular culture, appearing in films, television productions, documentaries, and countless recordings. Its even the tune your washine machine sings when it is done with a load of washing! More than two centuries after its composition, the work continues to captivate audiences with its youthful energy, warmth, and sheer joy.
This remarkable programme will be brought to life by an outstanding ensemble of artists whose combined experience and artistry place them among South Africa's most respected performers:
Janette Rottcher (piano)
Zanta Hofmeyr (violin)
Jeanne-Louise Moolman (viola)
Susan Mouton (cello)
Christi-Louise Swanepoel (double bass)
Reon van Aardt (clarinet)
Linette van der Merwe (mezzo-soprano)
Linelle Wimbles (soprano)
Each performer brings a distinguished career of solo, chamber, orchestral, and teaching achievements, and together they promise interpretations of exceptional musical insight, technical brilliance, and expressive power. Their collective artistry will illuminate every facet of Schubert's music—from the intimate poetry of his songs to the exuberant charm of his chamber masterpieces.
Whether you are a lifelong lover of classical music or discovering Schubert for the first time, Schubertiade offers an unforgettable musical experience filled with beauty, passion, and some of the finest music ever written.
